First up is Austin based Black Pumas, with their debut self-titled album. From the opening bars, this is sun-drenched soul that really doesn’t sound like it was released this year. With the recent heatwaves in the UK, this is feeling super pertinent. Hands down my favourite track is the gorgeously funky Fire. Eric Burton’s vocals just drip soul, and that guitar is so lush it hurts. This is an instant summer classic.
Next up is this month’s single. Orchards have been making a big splash since they got signed to Big Scary Monsters last year. Their brand of shimmery, melodic guitar pop is just so damn good, and it’s a continuation of BSM’s ridiculous signings over the past couple of years. They’re latest A/B side Young/Mature Me is no different. These Brightonians meld together dream pop with proper indie-dance-pop so effortlessly, it makes other bands look like amateurs. The A-side is a dancey banger, whereas the B-side is a bit more of a slow, melodic banger, with one of the most sing-a-long-able choruses I’ve heard in a while.
