The Letter
First up this month is something I chanced upon last month, even though it’s a 10th anniversary re-release. Raashan Ahmed, of the Crown City Rockers collective, released Soul Power as a loose collection of tracks around his solo debut The Push. Even though it wasn’t meant as a coherent album, all the tracks on Soul Power are certified bangers. Raashan’s flow is insane, and the musical intersection of 90s boom bap, the Chicago sound and soul is absolute bliss. This is Conscious Hip-Hop at it’s best.
Next up is a special treat, in that you get another album! CURL come to us from Portsmouth, UK via Nice in France. Shapeshifters is a lush, atmospheric slice of indie-rock that listens as if Radiohead and Pavement had a daughter who listened to a lot of The Cure. This is the kind of music you want to stick on late at night when everything feels like it’s in slow-motion, especially closing track Electrotherapy.
